The Enchantress is a minor character but also responsible for transforming the Prince into a Beast, due to his arrogance.

She also transformed herself into an old woman and offered the Prince a rose, and a homeless woman from the village named Agathe. At the end of the film, when Belle expresses love for the Beast, she reverts her curse. She is portrayed by Hattie Morahan.

In the new live-action musical version of the first film, the Enchantress narrates the opening sequence. His role in this film was expanded, unlike the original film, where he only appears at the opening.

Role in the Film[]

As in the original film, the Enchantress visited the castle disguised as an old woman one night during a debutante ball and offered the Prince a rose in exchange for protection from the freezing storm. When the Prince laughed at her offering and rejected it, she revealed her true form as a beautiful and magical sorceress, cursing the Prince for his arrogance; He transformed him into a horrible beast and his servants into household objects.

His spell was so powerful that all memories of the Prince and his servants were erased from the neighboring village. He also left behind three magical artifacts: the Enchanted Rose that he had initially offered her, a mirror that allows its user to see anything they wanted to see, and a book that could transport its reader anywhere they wanted to go, although this was dismissed by him as another cruel mockery (there was nowhere in the world he could go where he wouldn't be rejected for his appearance). If the Beast did not learn to love someone and earn their love in return by the time the last petal of the Enchanted Rose fell, then the spell would become permanent: the Prince would remain a Beast forever and the servants would lose their humanity. It is also shown that with each petal that fell from the Enchanted Rose, a part of the castle would collapse and the servants would develop more characteristics of the household objects they transformed into.

Later, the Enchantress is shown to have lived in the village, under the guise of a beggar named Agathe, and Gaston once mocked her for her misfortune. When Gaston abandoned Maurice to be devoured by wolves, Agathe rescued him and returned him to the village where she told everyone of Gaston's villainy, but she was unable to defend Maurice when Gaston convinced the villagers that she was untrustworthy.

The Enchantress then traveled to the Beast's castle, arriving just in time to see Belle admit her love for the Beast even though he was dead and the last petal had fallen. With that, the Enchantress restores the rose and the curse is lifted: the Beast and his servants return to normal, the ruined castle repairs itself and returns to its former majestic and imposing state, and the village regains its memories of the Prince and his staff. In the end, the Enchantress gives a fleeting smile as she watches the Prince's staff reunite with their loved ones.

Trivia[]

  • A deleted scene from the remake showed LeFou meeting the Enchantress in person, also asking her if it was worth cursing the inhabitants while she gave him an answer.
